The Community Scholars Program (CSP) now in its fifth decade, provides a full range of academic and social support for the transition of a select cohort of students who are from underrepresented communities to college.
The Community Scholars experience begins with a five-week academic summer program prior to the students’ first year at Georgetown designed to aid their transition to higher education. In addition to taking credit-bearing courses, students attend orientation workshops and begin forming bonds with one another, professors, and administrators that will help sustain them through college.
CSP supports its students throughout their Georgetown careers with academic advising, mentoring and personal counseling, study groups, workshops and seminars.
The Georgetown Scholarship Program (GSP) also enhances the university’s college success programming for students from underserved communities. Currently, GSP provides programmatic support for over 650 undergraduates, ensuring that students can access the resources and networks of support they need to thrive at Georgetown. GSP also works as an advocacy organization that not only supports students, but also focuses on removing unnecessary barriers to success, such as cost prohibitive campus traditions. GSP endeavors to empower students to advocate for themselves and other first-generation and low-income students.
Students who enter the GSP, gain access to campus support, academic and career help, mentorship programs, and a vast network consisting of alumni, parents, and friends of Georgetown. GSP enjoys a 96.4% graduation rate and, as of May 2018, will officially have more than 1,000 graduates.
