WHAT WE DO. WHY WE DO IT.

Our work must look beyond the Hilltop to engage with communities to transform society.

In collaboration with community partners, we seek opportunities to re-imagine ways in which Georgetown can more widely expand the educational capital of individuals, families and communities. We build on our significant experience working locally and globally with community partners to establish shared ownership of community outcomes. The scope of this challenge will require scalable solutions beyond Georgetown’s capacity, and we pursue this work with the goal of launching a new movement in higher education that embraces an expanded sense our societal responsibility and provides tested examples for others to follow.

MORE ON OUR PROJECTS.

MARTHA'S TABLE

In the Summer of 2018, Georgetown launched an extensive partnership with Martha’s Table, a local DC non-profit that works to support stronger children, stronger families, and stronger communities by increasing access to quality education programs, healthy food, and family supports. After 37 years of honoring this mission in Ward 1, Martha’s Table relocated to the Fort Stanton/Hillsdale area in Ward 8. Through this expansion, Martha’s Table, with the support of Georgetown University, will stand directly with children and families in a neighborhood that has been under-resourced for generations.

Our partnership with Martha’s Table is about bringing Georgetown out into communities. It’s an opportunity to re-imagine ways in which Georgetown can more widely grow the educational capital of individuals, families and communities. The Hub’s ultimate goal in this work is to develop sharable strategies for landscape analyses and structured conversations that help find the sweet spot between the needs and vision of a community, the resources of local educational institutions / industry / nonprofits, and the expertise of the higher education partners.

To achieve this objective, The Hub employs iterative research-hypothesis-action cycles to move steadily toward a long-term goal (e.g. Greater education, training, and opportunities leading to attachment to successful work) while demonstrating short-term responsiveness and efficacy.

OUR PROCESS:

RESEARCH

What research has already been conducted that informs our understanding of issues pertaining to educational advancement and workforce readiness in this community?

INQUIRY

What research has already been conducted that informs our understanding of issues pertaining to educational advancement and workforce readiness in this community?

ACTION

What action can we propose to test one of the hypotheses (and initiate further research-hypothesis-action cycles)?

Additionally, The Hub serves to coordinate across the multiple strands of the GU – MT partnership. Other Georgetown entities involved include The Center for Social Justice (CSJ) and The Early Childhood Innovation Network (ECIN). While CSJ brings it’s expertise in early childhood and elementary school literacy, ECIN brings a host of programs, including parent and teacher mindfulness training and early childhood mental health consultation.

THE GOODWILL EXCEL CENTER

In the Summer of 2019, Georgetown launched a partnership with The Goodwill Excel Center, a tuition-free adult charter high school that awards industry recognized certifications and high school diplomas, not GEDs, to adult learners in the District. The Goodwill Excel Center (GEC) responds to the fact that life commitments and circumstances can often stop people from continuing their high school education by offering access to transportation assistance, child care and flexible class schedules. GEC’s mission is to transform lives through the attainment of a high school diploma and industry certifications leading to sustainable, living wage careers.

Our partnership with GEC is about exploring ways in which Georgetown’s educational capital can help advance GEC’s mission and the education and careers of the individuals they serve. Our starting points for this work are:

Curriculum and teaching development: working with GEC on innovating, improving, and evaluating the high school curriculum. We also launched a partnership with Georgetown’s RISE&Teach program, placing two Georgetown students in GEC STEM classes to design and teach lesson plans for the academic year.

Career Growth: this seeks to align our current work with Martha’s Table with the college and career readiness work at Goodwill.
